War Dogs (2016) Review

war-dogs-posterFrom Warner Bros. and the director of the Hangover trilogy, Todd Phillips, is a comedy about a couple of friends who become arm’s dealers while aiding the U.S. overseas. David Packouz is tired of his career and is about to usher in a new baby with his girlfriend Iz. An old-time friend, Efraim Divoreli, convinces David in joining him in his business AEY, Inc as an opportunity to raking in the big bucks. But when lies soon turns to betrayal, David must make a decision that will clear his name once and for all. The film stars Miles Teller and Jonah Hill.

There wasn’t a lot of marketing for ‘War Dogs‘ but with a formidable cast in Teller and Hill one would think it could be for some fun. As the premise indicates it’s about a couple of guys who get into the business of selling arms deals overseas without any knowledge of international laws and economic restrictions when it comes to trade. And with that much information is what the whole movie is about. The movie was okay as it wasn’t memorable or terrible but rather it had potential to be more then what I had expected. There were moments that made me laugh and much of that came from Jonah Hill who’s the one that influences his friend, David, to joining in his business. 635941649200081557-AATD-FP-035

What I had trouble with had more to do with the pacing and direction of the film as it progressed. The movie started off taking its time as David runs into his long-time friend Efraim as they catch up after so many years. Then it takes its time as we get into the details of the operation and how arms deals work. By the end of the movie we get a very disappointing conclusion that was building up to something that at least for me should’ve been more. Instead, the conclusion falls flat and doesn’t feel like there was any resolve or a confrontation that should’ve taken place. So as for the editing it really struggled. We then get into whether the movie is supposed to be a drama or a comedy but rather ends up being a combination of both which didn’t always work.

maxresdefault-2.jpg

The chemistry between the actors was fine as there were moments that had me laughing. Without getting into spoiler territory, once we see both David and Efraim head to Iraq while trying to transport weapons to a military base is when the laughter really begins. There is even a surprise appearance, to whom will not be told, that has some involvement between David and Efraim. From an acting standpoint there weren’t a lot of problems because both Jonah Hill and Miles Teller did great together. This leads us to Ana de Armas who plays as David’s girlfriend, Iz. As we get to know her and then find out of her pregnancy we get to build a little bit of compassion for her when the secrecy of the business starts to slip and becomes more frustrated as time goes on. For what she did, Armas did great and nothing could be said otherwise.

Overall, ‘War Dogs‘ suffers from an identity as it tries to cater to being either a comedy or an action drama. Most of it stems from the script and there being way too much of the details that had to be spelled out to the audience. Both Miles Teller and Jonah Hill did a fine job while shaking things up a bit as the movie trudged along. If you’re going in expecting a straight up comedy then you may be left disappointed but it’s not to say the movie doesn’t entertain.

Sausage Party (2016) Review

v1.bTsxMjE5Njg0NDtqOzE3MDYxOzEyMDA7MjAyNTszMDAwFrom the mind of Seth Rogen comes a raunchy R-rated animated feature about food that once taken off the shelf they expect to go to the great beyond. But when they’re told the great beyond is actually fabricated and is really a place of bad things, the store bands together and fights back. The movie is directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon and stars the voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, & Michael Cera.

Just off the first trailer for ‘Sausage Party‘ I immediately was curious as to what this movie was going to be about. There were references to sex, orgies, and visuals that most certainly gets taken to another level. That said, this is an original piece of comedy that had me laughing non-stop. Yes there was an abundance of vulgarity to which can push people away but it managed to balance itself with the different food groups that implied so many cultural references. With a simple premise the movie could have struggled but with comedians such as Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig they managed to carry the film.

images

One of the best parts in the movie is also the most over-the-top as the film is coming to a close. It was so crazy that it had me laughing and wide-eyed for a good 2 minutes. As the movie implies in the trailer you knew what you were getting into and it was about that time that the film took it to that point. Now with the things that didn’t work a lot of it had to do with the verbiage as it felt as the F-bombs were dropping like crazy. And sometimes there would be lulls to where you wondered why certain things could have been cut out to reduce the runtime. However, with a movie that runs 89 minutes you can tell the filmmakers wanted to have enough that would entice all audiences.

This movie is definitely not for younger audiences and should not be mistaken for your typical animated feature. ‘Sausage Party‘ knows what it is and runs with it that does not disappoint. For being different and original this was a surprise and Sony is already looking to green-light a sequel pending the results of this weeks box-office run. If you’re looking to have fun and laugh yourself out the door then go watch this movie. There’s a little bit of everything to satisfy even the most skeptical.

Ghostbusters (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

ghostbusters_ver6It’s been over 30 years since Ivan Reitman’s feature, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, about a group who band together in discovering paranormal activity all around New York. The movie would become a staple to Reitman’s career and a fan favorite. We’d then see a sequel in 1989 with the original cast returning that would lead to mixed reactions. And with Paul Feig wanting to resurrect the franchise he does so by replacing our fond male leads with an all female cast of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as they dawn the jumpsuits and take fight to the ghosts and ghouls of New York City.

As Erin Gilbert sets herself for tenure at Harvard, she pleads with her friend Abbey to take down a book they both worked on that dealt with the paranormal. But after the Aldrich hauntings and callings of paranormal events popping up around New York, they assemble a team to investigate the events as they find out someone is perpetrating the ghost sitings and is planning for something much bigger. There was a lot of flack for Paul Feig’s decision for an all female cast. More so was the expectations for ‘Ghostbusters‘ as many wondered if it could harness the charisma and wit that came from the original cast. Now that the movie is released and many have gone to see it, we can say it’s not a blunder.

screen shot 2016-03-03 at 9.13.12 am

Not being sure how I would react to ‘Ghostbusters‘ I went in with low expectations so to not set myself up for disappointment. Also was the amount of chatter in regards to how awful the movie was with what seems to have audiences and critics at odds. The movie opened in great fashion as we see some paranormal activity over at the Aldridge Estate. This leads us to meeting Erin and Abbey, who after a fallout over their book, agree to investigate the Aldridge case. And this is how the Ghostbusters unit is born. The chemistry between Wiig and McCarthy flowed and did too with Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. All of them had their own quirks which was a compliment to Bill Murray and company.

Ghostbusters-2016-Trailer

Many wondered if the original cast would make appearances in the new movie and so they did. They weren’t big roles nor were they crucial to the plot, instead it was a trickle here and a trickle there that made it fun rather then all in one take. One of the interesting roles we see is in Chris Hemsworth as the Ghostbuster’s new receptionist. He definitely found a fit with the cast as his odd personality matched that of Kate McKinnon but not as you may expect. Seeing him in future installments, if there are any, will be a welcome that’s for sure.

For the most part the movie brought nostalgia as to the return of the jump suits, ghostbusters mobile, old ghosts we’ve seen in the past, and the iconic theme music. The music was hit and miss and personally wasn’t all that memorable when compared to the original. The overall story started off great but then it fell into a borage of ghosts that the Ghostbusters had to shoot at. I got the impression that the person pulling the strings, played by Rowan North, was being set up for future installments as the main villain. Come to find out it doesn’t turn out that way and all we get is a dissatisfied character.

maxresdefault-2

Yes the movie is entertaining to watch with an all female cast and we do get shout outs to the original. There’s promise for a franchise as was started by Paul Feig, but the question lies into whether the audiences respond well to the reboot. And with audiences and critics at odds over the movie, it should make for interesting results and whether or not a ‘Ghostbusters 2‘ will be green lit. As for now, ‘Ghostbusters‘ pleases but can do much much better.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

Mike_and_Dave_Need_Wedding_DatesFrom 20th Century Fox comes a comedy from Director Jake Szymanski that stars Zack Efron and Adam Devine. After a fallout between Mike and Dave’s parents over their unflattering family gatherings and the impending wedding of their sister Jeanie, Mike and Dave are put to the test to find reasonable wedding dates to end their relentless shenanigans. But when they encounter two up-to-no-good women themselves it takes us on a ride where respectability becomes too much for them all and may draw disaster yet again. The movie also stars Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Sam Richardson.

If there’s one thing I’m sure about, it’s that this movie is much more tolerant then ‘Dirty Grandpa‘ (Read review here) which starred Zac Efron and Robert Dinero. We see Zac Efron return in a new comedy with co-star Adam Devine as they search to find two grounded women to go with them to Hawaii in preparation for their sister’s wedding. What follows is a combination of laughs mixed with oh they didn’t just go there moments and an ending that has been played out in so many other films that you can see it coming from a mile away. Although it wasn’t a terrible experience it also wasn’t memorable either as some of the performances were over the top with head scratchers to go along with it.

mike-dave-need-wedding-dates-red-band-trailer

What’s interesting by now is how Efron has been in few other comedies prior to this release and how he seems to be type-cast for these roles. His performance as Dave Stangle, who’s the brother along-side Mike Stangle, was not as distracting as some of the other characters whom we’ll get to in just a bit. Dave was more of the compassionate one of the two whereas his brother would resist to change as his parents had hoped for. By the end you were rooting for Dave then you were for Mike when he along with the girls try to mend fences for the bride to be. As far as the performance by Adam Devine, he was just a little too much for my liking as he would overreact to certain situations or would come off as a whiny brat when things don’t go his way. For the co-stars, the brother battle shall go to Dave.

519483644-Mike-And-Dave-Need-Wedding-Dates-Trailer

This leads us to the two females we encounter with Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick who lie their way into getting a free vacation to Hawaii with Dave and Mike. It’s been said before in ‘Dirty Grandpa‘ and now in this movie but Aubrey Plaza plays these over the top snobs who puts herself out there in demeaning or unflattering ways. She wasn’t fun to watch nor did I care for her. Her co-star in Anna Kendrick could be said the same but in a different perspective. When it comes down to it, both Tatiana and Alice were unflattering from the start. But it isn’t until you learn why Alice has fallen so low to the point of her personal hygiene and antics reflecting her sorrow that she gives herself the chance to right the wrongs from previous relationships. For the co-stars, Alice wins the battle single-handedly.

There were some funny moments in the movie that had me and other audience members laughing pretty hard. One scene in particular takes place inside of a hotel hallway between Mike and Tatiana in an ear to ear conversation. Another moment takes place inside of a day spa where the bride to be gets an unexpected surprise from a male masseuse. Finally, don’t leave once the movie ends because the end credits have gags that will leave you rolling to the exit.

30FF708300000578-3437421-image-m-54_1454950469636

Unfortunately it’s difficult to get behind any of the characters even with Dave and Alice who ultimately lead the performances. Because both the male and female pairs are trying to play it off as decent individuals yet are totally the opposite in their own ways it was difficult to see even Mike and Dave believing Tatiana or Alice were innocent. Worse yet is the fact that both parties were acting so that they make everything seem okay when in fact their behaviors were so off the wall. How could anyone not notice the warning signs considering their personalities are almost identical.

With some character development towards the latter end of the film it doesn’t make up for the outlandish antics that ran from the start. There were moments of laughter that kept my focus but it all just didn’t seem believable for me to care for any of the characters. Not enticing nor a total letdown, you’re going to get what you’re asking for when it comes to ‘Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates‘. Let the decision be yours.

Eddie The Eagle (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

eddie-one-sheetBased on an inspiring true story, Eddie Edwards is determined to make it to the olympics all his life while growing up. After everyone’s touting him that he wouldn’t make it, he finds a friend in Bronson Peary who coaches him by his side. Together they prove to everyone that getting into the olympics is not all about the successes but the struggles getting there. The movie is directed by Dexter Fletcher and stars Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton.

I was very much looking forward to ‘Eddie The Eagle‘ due to the fact that Taron Egerton is an up and coming actor who’s previous involvement in ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘ was  awesome. This time we find Egerton playing the role of a rookie ski jumper who’s able to get into the 1988 Winter Olympics with Hugh Jackman in a supporting role. This movie was really good and the direction by Dexter Fletcher added to it with the production as it took place in the 1980s. From the background music to old footage of the Olympics in 1988 you truly felt you were in that time period. And the performance by Egerton was great as he not only played Eddie Edwards figuratively but mentally as well.

df-09922_r

There were some great moments in the movie with one of them being when Eddie decides to try the 40 meter jump for the first time. He was successful with the 15 meter jump that he thought nothing would be different this time around. And of course when he attempts the jump it doesn’t turn out so well. It was the over-confidence of Eddie that made him crazy and inspiring to watch all at the same time. Some of the camera shots were from such great heights that as a viewer you get butterflies as he makes his descent. To imagine doing a jump from 40 meters is nothing in comparison to a 70 or 90 meter jump as we’ll see later on. It’s a dangerous sport that even the greatest ski jumpers have been known to take hard falls.

7191188_eddie-the-eagle-2016-movie-images-hugh_a92bef2b_m

As good of a performance we get from Taron Egerton we also get from Hugh Jackman. His portrayal as a former ski jumper who struggles with alcohol abuse was so good that he was able to balance the two very well. Both Egerton and Jackman had good chemistry together that towards the end of the film their characters found a mutual respect for each other. Nothing can be said about the acting as both of them did a really great job telling a story that found respect in the portrayal of Eddie Edwards in real life. There were some minor issues with the film as one of them being a scene where Eddie walks into a sauna where Slovakian ski jumpers stood bare naked. The scene was meant to be funny which it was when Eddie first walked in. However, as the scene went on there almost was a homosexual vibe where it almost became awkward. At the end of it your still not sure if it was implied that they were gay or if was the direction of the scene that gave it that effect.

With great direction and production by Dexter Fletcher, ‘Eddie The Eagle‘ is inspiring to the story of a rookie who’s dream of getting into the Olympics came true while proving everyone wrong. It was great seeing Taron Egerton paring with Hugh Jackman as we got to see two action stars come together and giving it their best. And before I forget, the movie does such a good job flowing with ease that the hour and 47 minute run-time went by like nothing. Had the movie been longer you wouldn’t have noticed because the pacing was superb. This is definitely a feel good movie anyone could enjoy as I highly recommend giving this a watch.

Deadpool (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

deadpool_ver9The highly anticipated Marvel comic-book action movie has arrived with Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool‘. After finding out that Wade Willis has cancer, he is reached out to participate in a series of tests that can not only cure but make him capable of having super strength. When things go bad, Willis is out to seek the man who is responsible for his transformation and save his companion. The film is directed by Tim Miller and also stars Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, and Ed Skrein.

Wow! This is possibly one of the best comic book adaptations we’ve seen in some time since ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’. Given the R rating that everyone clamored for it gave the movie a gritty edge in violence and humor; all staying true to the comics that is ‘Deadpool‘. All of this mounting to a refreshing contrast to the Marvel cinematic universe we all have been used to seeing. Fun is the word you would describe this film; especially the performance given by Ryan Reynolds. Fans of the Marvel universe will be happy to know that the studio did justice to the character and didn’t hold any punches in the process.

deadpool_pic

One of the great things about the movie is the pacing as your constantly jumping from action scene to events leading up to what is just transpiring. There is never a dull moment because if it’s not the action your seeing it’s the backstory of Wade Willis that keeps you in tune. I thought Morena Baccarin (Vanessa) as Willis’s love interest had good chemistry with Reynolds and made you feel for the both of them. Both of them were odd in their own ways which worked for them as a couple. And Wade’s closest friend Weasel, played by T.J. Miller wasn’t terrible either. For the most part everyone did a good job.

images

What could’ve been elaborated more was the intentions of the underground establishment and the testing of live hosts turning them into enemies of the state. The casting of Ed Skrein as Francis was good but would’ve liked to have seen more on the development of his character. With the tight runtime it sometimes felt like there wasn’t enough time to explain events that takes place in the movie. However, again, emphasis was put on the action and humor involving Deadpool as he tries to save Vanessa as so much of the complaints can become overlooked and forgiven.

Some of the great moments I took from the movie were the references to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The opening credits alone gets you some laughs cause you don’t see it coming. It’s hard not to bring up the X-Men as we see Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead take part along-side the ever so complicated hero. You sense there will be a connection at some point where we will see Deadpool team up with X-Men in the future. And lets not forget a small cameo appearance by Stan Lee that’s priceless to watch. Many people in the theater that I attended cheered on for Mr. Lee. This man is a legend and will always have a place in the Marvel universe if we hadn’t noticed already.

Deadpool-Movie-Ryan-Reynolds-Star-Confirmed

Everything one could have asked for was received as ‘Deadpool‘ delivered on all the goods. Ryan Reynolds is a great addition to the Marvel cinematic universe as we wash away the backlash from ‘Green Lantern‘; although more of the problems were in the script and not Reynolds himself. So he redeems himself here and promises a franchise as it will be interesting to see him cross-over to the X-Men universe somewhere down the line. Overall this is a movie you will definitely want to watch that not only is action packed but is sure to give you a few belly laughs.

How to be Single (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

HTBS Key ArtFrom Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema is the next romance comedy about two sisters, Alice and Meg, who try finding love in all the wrong ways. In life there are moments when we know what we want or don’t want. But when it comes to being single, you’ll never know where life will take you as these sisters find out in ‘How to be Single‘. The film is directed by Christian Ditter with stars Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann, and Damon Wayans, Jr.

Stemming from the trailers this movie looked to be a hit or a miss with more of a gut feeling moving towards the latter. Rebel Wilson is very much liked in Hollywood and by the general public especially with her involvement in the ‘Pitch Perfect‘ series. Her wit and zany personality makes for a good time as is seen in the movie. The main draw going for this movie is in Rebel Wilson and is why audience goers, primarily the females, will go out to see ‘How to be Single‘.

640_How-to-Be-Single_2016_01_20_14_08_50

Let’s start with the good things about the movie, as stated before, the idea of how to be single worked for the most part. There are three characters we follow, including Alice, Meg, and Josh (will be left out of the review due to spoilers). Dakota Johnson played the part of Alice and was the main focus as she battles her emotions after breaking up with her boyfriend in order to re-evaluate their relationship. Then by making acquaintances with Robin (Rebel Wilson) at a new job, Alice is introduced to the idea of just putting herself out there, literally. By the end of the movie she realizes that maybe being in a relationship isn’t something that’s good for her at the moment. However, Alice then makes the case that by not allowing oneself to meet new people can keep someone from truly making them happy.

HTBS Video 1

There seems to be a message ‘How to be Single‘ tries to convey across at a general level and is something I thought was thought provoking. Adding to that message is Alice’s sister, Meg, played by Leslie Mann who for the longest time didn’t see herself becoming a mom as she herself is a doctor who delivers babies. Those feelings soon changed as the movie rolled on thus adding to the overall narrative of taking the chances not knowing what one may be depriving themselves. Both Leslie Mann and Dakota Johnson were good as their chemistry blended really well.

For Rebel Wilson, she was okay as I didn’t have much of an issue with her. The only thing I would say is that Wilson may be getting that typecast treatment of that loud mouth, in your face persona. Where she works in the movie is a head scratcher and to imagine how she would get a job with that profession is hilarious. The issue however stems with the fact that Robin was there just for the laughs and didn’t have much to do. But she was necessary to the influence of Alice and how she gets more then she bargained for.

How-To-Be-Single-2016-Movie-Wallpaper-17

Though the movie loses focus on occasion, a tendency to overdue the gag moments as one scene shows a college group with penis lollypops, cups, and even straws was just a little much. In the end, the movie was decent and the performances by Mann, Johnson, and Wilson were good. There will definitely be some good laughs along with some that aren’t as funny but your able to go with it.

Zoolander 2 (2016) Review

Zoolander-2-Movie-PosterIt’s the return of the fashion sensation as Derek Zoolander makes an impact in Paramount’s much anticipated sequel from 2001’s ‘Zoolander‘. When Justin Bieber is gunned down, Derek Zoolander is brought in to search for the person responsible. When Mugatu escapes from imprisonment he holds Zoolander’s son captive and seeks to sacrifice Jr. to a cult. Ben Stiller returns as director along with co-stars Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, and Will Ferrell.

After a 15 year absence we are reunited with Ben Stiller as Derek Zoolander. Audiences pushed for a sequel and their voices were heard. The only question to ask is if the long wait  pays off. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t much here to warrant much of a celebratory return. We do get the chemistry between Derek and Hansel that everyone enjoyed from the original. This time, however, the script was minimal with little cohesion to last the entire 104 minute runtime.

Hail, Caesar! (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

MV5BMjQyODc3MTI2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDMxMjU2NzE@._V1_UY1200_CR64,0,630,1200_AL_From the directors who brought us ‘No Country for Old Men‘ and ‘True Grit‘ comes a 50’s telling about a studio executive trying to keep everything in line as communists kidnap their lead actor in Baird Whitlock. The movie has a star studded cast with Josh Brolin, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and George Clooney.

The easiest way to explain ‘Hail, Caesar!‘ is the plot point of George Clooney being kidnapped and held ransom to the demands of communists who want to expose Hollywood for its propaganda. Although the main plot is on Clooney and Josh Brolin we’re also introduced to different plot points where we follow actors with struggles in their own right. There really isn’t a simple way of explaining the film because none of it really ties into one another. It’s one of those things where audiences may be put off by the un-cohesive plot.

hail_caesar_trailer_screenshot_-_h_2015_copy

Aside from main story arc between Eddie Mannix and Baird Whitlock, one of the other side stories involved Rodeo actor Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich) who goes from western to drama. It comes as a new experience for Doyle, who with an obvious accent, finds the transition a little bit difficult. Easily the best side story where you couldn’t help but laugh at Doyle’s attempt to play a serious scene when his accent and demeanor is glaringly off. Another scene that stood out was when Eddie Mannix met with religious men and wanted their input on Capital Production’s newest film ‘Hail Caesar‘. There’s a moment when the conversation about how the movie’s representation of the son of God that turns hilarious as they each argue.

The movie is getting many praise while others are pointing out the flaws of an unfocused script. I fall in the middle because as there were many moments of laughter there just wasn’t much to go on as to an understanding. Production value is great with drop-ins to Hollywood shoot scenes. It’s difficult to comment on the acting because none of the side plots came together thus ultimately leaving it to a scene by scene basis. Very entertaining with plenty to laugh at, audiences may find ‘Hail Caesar!‘ a mystery at the end.

Pride, Prejudice, & Zombies (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

PHeVyBYeK0Ajif_1_lBased off the book series by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith is the live adaptation of a love story taking place during a zombie apocalypse. As a plague devastates an English village of Meryton, Elizabeth Bennett is determined to rid of the zombie infestation while also falling for Mr. Darcy. With relationships turning on every corner, trust soon turns to desperation as England rages against the ill born disease. The film is directed by Burr Steers and stars Lily James, Sam Riley, and Matt Smith.

Curious going into the movie I was intrigued by the trailers over the last month; especially with Lily James starring as the lead role. James did a great job in last year’s live adaptation of ‘Cinderella‘ and returns here to bring another book to life. If you go into ‘Pride, Prejudice, & Zombies‘ thinking your going to get an action packed movie then you will be sorely mistaken. This unfortunately is what took me by surprise as having not read the book I wasn’t sure what to expect. With that said, the movie is a mess.

screen_shot_2015-10-09_at_12.41.55_pm_0

Starting with the narrative we’re introduced to a village within England that has come to be populated with zombies. As the opening credits hits we are given a backstory to the events that led up to the plague and how local cities are dealing with the zombie apocalypse. Then we see Lily James who plays Elizabeth Bennett, who with five sisters stands side by side as they clean up the outbreak when it shows up. Not too long later we get a love story developing between Ms. Bennett and Mr. Darcy which then leads to the entire movie focusing on them and not so much zombies.

pride-and-prejudice-and-zombies-sam-riley

Some of the positives I’ll give is the fact that the film suits the time period of 17th century London. The performance by Lily James as the heroine ass kicker is also to be commended. Having started on television and then working her way onto the big stage with ‘Wrath of the Titans‘, ‘Broken‘, James is getting on peoples radar as she should be. Her co-star in Sam Riley who plays Mr. Darcy was good and nothing more then that. His ability to play the male version of James’ role worked out well as they each possessed qualities that brought friction as they fought for each other’s love.

Having said the positives we now delve into the negatives of the film. There was very little action or suspense which came as a surprise considering the movie was ultimately a love story. There was more dialogue that took place over action that literally you could have taken the zombie component out altogether. Sometimes your thinking what was the reason for having zombies when it’s the living that’s causing more trouble. And the romance between Lily James and Sam Riley seemed neutral. I wasn’t rooting for either one of them that by the end of the movie your forced to accept the outcome. The buildup could’ve been better with more to be at stake. Then a love triangle looked like it was starting to shape up and that’s when I was over the movie entirely. The movie didn’t know what it wanted to be; thus lacking an identity.

As confusing as the movie was with poor editing and fast cuts that denied you the pleasure of watching the action in full your left dissatisfied. I do not recommend ‘Pride, Prejudice, & Zombies‘ if your looking for an action zombie flick. Instead you will get a romance glossed over by mild violence and a tame script.
